It is the final summer of Collie's innocence when an ill-fated romance forces her into maturity. Fast approaching the age of adulthood under the king's law, Collie, the beautiful, eldest daughter of a Middletown tinker, sets her sights upon a handsome young fisherman named Dugan, the troubled son of an unscrupulous man from the lower-class village of Ganty. A tumultuous love affair soon ensues as they attempt to cross the lines of class segregation, bigotry, and religious differences amid their own internal conflicts. Collie clings to her dreams of grandeur--- a life of unfettered leisure, travel, and excitement, for she fears to end up like her mother, tied to a kitchen and a house full of children. The rebellion against her mother and her way of life is a constant source of contention between them as she doggedly pursues Dugan, shunning the affections of the blacksmith, Arrick, a more proper, acceptable suitor, favored by Collie's parents. Down in Ganty, there are two dangerous men of power---a pub master named Barrtel, and Dugan's father, Harlo, cordial enemies that tolerate one another in an uneasy truce. Dugan spends a great deal of time drinking at Barrtel's pub in an effort to escape some of the unspeakable horrors he has been involved with at the hands of his father. As Collie resists becoming her mother, Dugan resists becoming his father while the two young lovers struggle in their rocky, forbidden relationship, and Collie slowly begins to unravel the mystery of a secret past involving Harlo and her own parents. Set in the mythical realm of Donnel by the sea in the rising spread of Christianity, Hope Flies on Broken Wings delves into two adolescent minds and their individual, personal struggles that draw them together while pushing them apart---two souls seeking redemption, each with a completely different life view of what constitutes hell on earth in this poignant tale of love and loss.

I don’t know if another writer pulls me in as quickly and completely as L. F. Falconer does. Her melodic prose and compelling characters lure me into the beautiful unknown, and I go willingly, following her down whatever path she charts for me, despite the pain, the sorrow, the all-consuming human beauty she lays down upon it.

This particular story is breathtaking, tarnished with the sublime—that awe-inspiring, confounding view of the abyss, haunting and demanding in every way. I can’t imagine anyone reading Collie’s and Dugan’s story and not feeling every bit of their sting, their want, their need. Their love seems capable of defying all that stands in its way—even the crack that severs it. And their story makes me think of Kintsugi, the Japanese Art of fixing broken pottery, whereby a lacquer resin is mixed with powdered gold, silver, platinum, copper or bronze, and placed between the cracks, salvaging the broken dish to make it something more beautiful than it was before.

I couldn’t wait to pick up the sequel, “Hope Rises from the Ashes,” hungry for more, wanting to know, to see, to feel again.

I read all genres and I enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that it is too short. I'll keep my eyes open for more by this author.
This book was a very easy read. The author included all I could want, a love story, a different place in time, a villain, happiness, sadness, tragedy... The author definitely leaves you wanting more. Hoping she writes more soon, I am sure I would enjoy her next book as much.
I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed my attention right from the beginnig and kept it the entire time. I couldn't put it down. The authors ability to decribe things makes you feel as if you are seeing/hearing/feeling as if you were there with the characters. I would defnately recommend this book to everybody!
This isn't the type of book that I would have usually picked out to read. But I am very glad I did. It turned out to be a very good and fast read. The story line is captivating and holds the reader in until the very end. I would love to read a sequel to this book to see what happens to the young girl. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
I like to savor a book. I read slow and enjoy every word. With some books I get bored and think ok, move on already, but not with this one. It's a great story with vivid characters and setting. I could almost smell the ocean and feel the sand as I read. I know, I exaggerate, but all the imagery was so clear in my head. Most of all, I love reading a first time author. You get a real sense of their storytelling ability and this author is going to be great! I won't give away the story; you just have to read it for yourself.
I LOVED this book. The author wrote in a beautiful dialect throughout and the story was a classic girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks but done so well it was haunting. I feel like there is much to explore in future books with only hints about mermen and ferries. The book is a passionate love story about a girl torn between two worlds, between her parents plans for her and her own desires, between her own desires and her love. Gripping. Thank you.
Like most young girls, Collie faces difficult choices. Choices often at odds with the dreams and desires of her parents. Her parents want her to be with Arrick from her own village; she is drawn to Dugan from the forbidden fishing village of Ganty.

This is a book on the edge of fantasy, set in a medieval land. But it is truly a character study, and in so doing the author has created a microcosm of our own society. The evils of abused women, a caste system where one group should not mingle with another, and self-imposed religious and moral beliefs are just a few of the issues addressed.

I enjoyed Hope Flies on Broken Wings. A story of young love is not part of my usual reads, but I had read L.F. Falconer's excellent book of short stories, Through a Broken Window Ten Dark Tales of the Strange and Deranged first, followed by her latest book The Vagabond's Son Prelude to a Legacy. The Vagabond's Son is by far my favorite, and although I tried not to, I kept comparing her first book Hope Flies to it. The author has grown tremendously in her writing which is as it should be. But I must admit I was intrigued just enough by the characters that I have no choice but to read the sequel. I have to find out what the future holds for Collie tinker and Dugan fisher.
