"Hold nothing back. Give everything." That's the catchphrase of Martin Calder, a teenager obsessed with the hit television show, The Metas. On a mission to get an autograph from the star of the show, Dana—no last name given—he comes face to face with reality. Dana and her twin brother, Van, the co-star of the show, aren’t exactly from around here.
The Titans of Ardana eBook JS Frankel
Review of The Titans of ArdanaWhere does YA author JS Frankel come up with his character’s epic superpowers and unique concept of a wide-ranging galaxy of planets, not to mention all of the complex plot twists? I truly marvel at the workings of his mind. In The Titans of Ardana, Martin, Dana, and Van frequently seem to be doomed—there’s no way out that I can see—but like little Houdini’s, they devise complicated schemes that serve as effective escape hatches. It’s rather amazing.
And so, I’d like to start with the book’s action scenes; they read like comic books, or maybe the action cartoons that my kids love. I can visualize the battles—the blows, the falls, the character “imitating a football”, as he is booted far and wide. I hold my breath as I read these scenes, hoping for the best. But unlike kids’ cartoons, Frankel does not spare even his most important characters from harm. The battles are more realistic than cartoons, in that they have bitter consequences.
The action scenes are quite vivid, and the characters also ring true. Frankel gets that teenagers feel like outsiders in the realms of family, friends, and schools. Often, they simply don’t fit in. But even if the protagonist who guides readers through the story is an outcast, he is also a genuinely good person. In The Titans of Ardana, the reader is invited to share in the narrator, Martin’s, thoughts; and they’re not always angelic. However, he consistently does the right thing. And the very “good” (but in the eyes of other teens, quite invisible) Martin—a skinny, awkward seventeen-year-old boy—is recognized by the beautiful and famous girl who is widely admired, as someone special. This gives a reader faith that doing the right thing counts for something. I must mention that the alien characters who at first appear to be all-that, are actually teens with very human fears and insecurities. And their quirks are quite unique, giving the book literal “flavor.” You’ll know what I mean when you read about Dana and Van’s diet.
Frankel understands how real leadership should work, as opposed to what we are seeing in the United States these days—the mere wielding of political power. He writes of the Titans as true leaders who work shoulder-to-shoulder with those they serve, rather than ruling randomly over them because they are physically stronger. This is a great message.
I’m also a YA author, and Frankel and I write differently. I probe the depths of the teenage mind, depicting constant mental anguish and struggles with gender and sexuality, and unfair hardships are front and center. Frankel examines aspects of strength and power and strategy within the context of teen relationships. However, we both create characters that are real and believable, and who learn to value important relationships because that is truly what it’s all about.

The Titans of Ardana eBook JS Frankel Reviews
Great book! Well written and very entertaining. I can't wait to read more from this author. If you are looking for a good read this is it.
In this story we follow the story of Martin Calder. Martin obsesses over a TV show called The Metas. He plans to get autographs from the two stars, Dana and Van. Those two actors are more than they seem.
A very fun exploration of alien visitation and super powers. Martin has a good attidute to help him handle impossible situations. Interesting events and twists in this story. This story will be enjoyed by lovers of science fiction from middle grades on up.
Martin Calder has been through a lot in his young life. The seventeen-year-old lost his father to cancer and has since grown more distant from his mother who has found a way to move forward. Between her job and the new man in her life, she finds little time to connect with her only child. With his grades slipping and few friends, Martin turns to his obsession with a TV show called ‘The Meta’s’ to cope with his depressing life. He comes up with a plan to gain the autographs from the shows two stars, Dana and Van. What he doesn’t realize is how this action will change his life forever.
Expertly written, with a rich, wonderful world and well-developed characters, Frankel’s creative prose carries this story magnificently. The action is realistic and dynamic. Martin’s consistent sarcastic thoughts and dialogue set the stage for a great page-turner. Fast-paced action with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Highly Recommended.
Science-Fiction from a writer who really understands how to get the most from his work. Captivating, fascinating and absolutely worth getting for your —you won’t regret it!
You must ask yourself a few questions when you buy a book. Just a couple. The first is—have you read anything else by this author? The second is—do you think this book is worth reading?
I have a couple of problems. I hadn’t read anything by J.S. Frankel before. That made me uneasy. I also didn’t know what to expect from the book. That made me wonder.
That’s also my problem because “The Titans of Adana” is an excellent book—and the author should be better known.
Why?
Well… imagine that show you enjoy watching. The lead star? You find him, or her, quite interesting. You’d love to meet them. You make the effort and you discover that they are nothing at all like the people they represent. Imagine your surprise, horror, and shock.
That’s this book.
Surprise, horror and shock. The blurb on gives nothing away, and I wondered why before I read the book.
Now I understand why.
But I’m not going to tell you.
Martin Calder, a fan, is obsessed with a show called “The Meta’s.” He heads out to get an autograph from the star of the show—Dana. But when he discovers… something…. Well… you’ll have to read it.
I don’t like to give away spoilers in my reviews. However, I’ll say this, the story of Martin and Dana is one that absolutely kept me entertained. I don’t often find myself so drawn into a book that time passes without my knowledge. This is a wonderful story. It made me very thankful that I decided to read it.
The author, J.S. Frankel did an excellent job weaving his tale. The description and story are both enthralling. The ending was wonderful. Miracles do happen every day—and sometimes they come in book form.
I’m going to recommend this to anyone who needs a reminder about good books being out there for everyone who wants them.
I’m not going to say a lot more about this book other than read it for yourself.
You won’t have any regrets. I promise.
If you do—I’ll eat my hat.
