The Twerp Generation Growing Up In Dallas in The '50s and '60s Richard Parker 9780615663289 Books Reviews
This was like time travel, back to those halcyon days of yore. If you were there, you'll remember. If you weren't, forget it. This is not literature, by any means.
Ordered this for my husband who grew up in east Dallas. He loved it.
Brought back lots of memories!!
Lots of pictures accompanied by the author's humorous running commentary. Many things I had not thought about in years snapped into focus after reading this book. Dallasites from this era will enjoy this casual, quick read.
Very entertaining and informative for those with deep ties to Dallas, not necessarily just the Boomer generation. Richard includes history I never knew (war training camps?), as well as personal anecdotes I would never have known. Good job getting in to see the Beatles, and making $6 on the deal, Richard!
I'm buying more for gifts.
Awesome history of Dallas from back in the 50's & 60's. Great photos of old Dallas, and the author's witty commentaries and recollections make this a super easy and entertaining read. I bought 3 more books after the 1st one to give out to friends.
This is a great read….never boring, always familiar, bringing up tons of memories of growing up in Dallas in the 50's and 60's. Richard Parker is known for his love of interesting trivia and creative genius….he has used both to accurately create the wonderful world we lived in. The things and times that we might have forgotten, he gives back to us as a gift on a silver platter. It is so fun to be part of a special group of people with so many of the same experiences…no one knows you like the people you grew up with, right? Get it, you won't be sorry!
Am so looking forward to his next book about Dallas that I hear is a more comprehensive and, dare I say, serious one about the history of Dallas from the turn of the century to the 1970's.
A super, easy to look at nostalgic compilation of growing up in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex in the 50's & '60s. A MUST to have on your shelf.
P.S. How could THE best Hamburger place in Dallas be left out? Whether you called it "Rosie's" or "Rose's", or it's official name "Rose's Bluebonnet Sandwich Shop", Rose Stivers served up the ultimate burger at Greenville & Yale. She was on the grill from when she arrived in 1939 until just before she passed away in late 2003.
By the way, anybody remember "Freaky (funny?) Flyers"...used to ride my bike up to the 7-11 in the mid-'60s & buy 'em. They were styrofoam airplanes in various shapes (flying banana, etc.)...probably about 10 different ones...came in packages like bottle caps candy used to; can't believe no one has brought those nifty little planes back. (I still have one of the clear nose clips from one of the planes I had)...have never heard or seen any mention of them on the internet.
